Welcome to day seventeen of the Createyou86 May A-Z Blog Series. When you first meet someone what do you say to them? I ask them "How are you?" I don't think that we as an American culture put enough emphasis on caring how each other are getting by in the day to day of everything that is happening in our lives. Is it really so hard to ask someone how they are, and listen to them for more than 30 seconds if they start to explain? I can't tell you how many times someone has asked how I was, waited for a super short generic answer, and just moved on expecting it to end there. Not only is it rude, but it is disrespectful as well. I can honestly say that I care what someone's day has been like! When you ask someone how their day has been, it might be the best five minutes of their day when you actually listen! Just slow down, and if you don't expect an answer longer than ten seconds or so, you shouldn't have asked it in the first place.

I don't think I've ever stopped to take time to think about what I ask people when I first meet them...but that's a good thing to think about! I think one of the first questions I ask is related to where they live/where they're from. I completely agree that it's important to truly listen to people when you're having a conversation!

This is 100% true. I always ask how people are, and they're sometimes taken aback. (Yes, even in Canada where everyone is supposedly super polite... not true lol.) I went to a cafeteria once and asked the lady how her day was and she actually teared up and said not one person had said anything to her all day... That's so sad! It was definitely a memorable moment and a smile goes a super long way.

This reminds me so much of when I was in high school and worked in retail. I remember one day, I was working as a cashier and this older gentleman asked me how I was. I replied, "good." even though I was having a completely miserable day and he could tell I was. He responded back, "Don't worry, life goes on and your day will get better. It's ok to be sad at times, but just remember to go to sleep tonight and wake up tomorrow with a smile."

Good reminder, I have to remind myself to stay and listen as I would want them to listen to me. Not intentionally- I have a hard time focusing!

This is such a great point! It's so easy to do the "how are you" drive by, but actually stopping to listen may make people share more!

I completely agree with this! I get so annoyed when I walk past people and they ask "how are you?" and keep walking. If you don't care, then don't say it. Great post!

I usually ask "how's it going?" which is kind of generic, but I expect someone to say how they are AND maybe something that's just happened to them or something they did that day. It's funny, earlier on the phone today with pest control I told the guy "have a nice afternoon" and he was so surprised sounding "oh! oh! thank you!" like no one ever told him to have a good afternoon before!
