The Truth About Love & Lightning Discussion Questions

Welcome to Book Club Sunday's on Createyou86.  Today we will be going through the first five discussion questions  starting on page 3 of the P.S. section in the back of the book.

1.) What do you think is worse: telling lies, like Gretchen, or being so blunt it's hurtful, like Annika? Have you ever told a lie to spare someone's feelings?
I tend to be a very blunt person, but I'm not blunt to be hurtful, and I would rather someone be blunt with me than to lie to me, and not be truthful at all.  I also think that we have all told a lie one time or another to soften a blow or spare a feeling or two.  We start lying at such a young age.

2.) How is Abigail's situation similar to her mother's situation nearly forty years before?  How does Gretchen's raising her as a single parent affect the choices Abby makes?
I think the fact that the father is kind of none participatory at this point is the main similarity, as well as the fact that the father doesn't know about the pregnancy.  I think that Abby is looking for the unknown man to be Sam because she doesn't have the father figure in her life, and that can be difficult for any young woman.  I think this drives her decision making at this time.

3.) Why do the Brink women jump to the conclusion that the stranger who 'fell from the sky" is Sam Winston?
There are plenty of reasons that these women assume that this man is Sam.  He has the scar where the raindrop would have been removed years before, his eyes are the same stormy color, the walnuts ended up on the ground when the storm came through, and it had been previously barren, the women don't see it yet, but there are blooms on the previously barren walnut trees.  The man found Sam's artifacts under the tree where he lay after the storm, and no one would have had them, but Sam.  His facial features are the same as well, just aged.

4.) Have you ever had someone from your past—a lost love, perhaps—appear from out of the blue? How did it affect you?
I don't seem to have this issue, as some do.  I have moved 3,000 miles from my hometown, and that makes it difficult to run into past flames, but even when I lived there I didn't often see past flames.

5.) How does the loss of one sense cause other senses to sharpen?  Do you think Bennie and Trudy see themselves as anything other than normal, since clearly Gretchen finds their heightened senses extraordinary?
With the loss of one sense such as sight, you need to reacclimate your other senses to make up for the loss of the one.  This may cause ones remaining senses to be extraordinary.  I think that the girls see themselves as completely normal, but they mess with their sister by going out of their way to point certain "extrasensory" things out when they are around her.

Thank you for joining us for this discussion.  Please feel free to leave your thoughts, and answers in the comments below!  Come back next Sunday for the part 5 synopsis of this book "Faith".

We hope that you are enjoying this book as much as we are here at Createyou86!
